Spiritual care is without a doubt part of health care and thus hospitals provide spiritual support to patients and companions. By handling these encounters in a compassionate yet professional manner, healthcare interpreters play a key role in patients’ experiences when going through emotional moments. This presentation will review the implications of interpreting prayers, rites, and readings that arise frequently in hospital settings, including their a) critical nature of the well-being of patients, b) taboo status in the profession, and c) resources to help interpreters succeed.
Learning Objectives:
  1. In this presentation we will review certain implications of interpreting prayers, rites, and readings which arise frequently in hospital settings.
  2. We will discuss the importance of faith-based interpreting in healthcare, identify challenges when interpreting for spiritual care, and potential solutions.
  3. We will practice some interpreting skills and protocols to manage spiritual care.

Presenter: Tatiana Cestari, Ph.D., CHI-Spanish

Tatiana Cestari, Ph.D., CHI-Spanish has 20 years of combined experience as a pharmacist, pharmacologist, researcher, professor, manager, and remote interpreter. She is passionate about quality, compliance, and cultural sensitivity in language access. She serves as the Director of Language Service Advocacy at Martti, is part of the NCIHC Board of Directors and Policy, Education, and Research committee; contributor to the Martti blog; and is co-author of The Remote Interpreter textbook. Tatiana has mentored; developed training; presented at events; published peer-reviewed articles; and lectured at various universities. Tatiana obtained her pharmacy degree and Ph.D. in pharmacology from Universidad Central de Venezuela.
