This 90 minute webinar is open to interpreters of all languages. Interpreting for palliative care is a unique challenge, as it may be a new specialization in many countries, so limited English proficient patients (LEP) may not be as familiar with it. With the increased aging population of LEPs in the United States, every interpreter should be familiar with the concept and practice of palliate care, and the cross-cultural nuances that may surface during these encounters. A 2010 survey in California found that 40% of patients receiving palliative care were LEPs. This webinar will go over the basics of palliative medicine, and some common terminology all interpreters should be familiar with.

Learning Objectives:
1. Attendees will receive and overview of palliative medicine in the United States, including laws governing its practice, and be able to compare it similar practices in other countries.
2. Attendees will understand the difference between hospice or residential palliative care, day care at a hospice, hospital palliative care, palliative home care and respite care.
3. Attendees will learn about specialized vocabulary used when addressing palliative medicine.
